Pokémon GO: Developers chat about the next 5 years

When Pokémon GO made its debut on mobile devices in the summer of 2016, probably no one could have predicted the runaway success of this game. Now, in 2021, Pokémon GO celebrates its fifth birthday and is slowly returning to normal after 18 months of the Corona pandemic. But what does that mean exactly? What does the future hold for Pokémon GO? Director of Global Product Marketing Michael Sterenka and EMEA Product Marketing Manager Philip Marz talked to Eurogamer's editorial team about that.

Back to In Person Live Events

First of all, Marz and Strenka addressed the question of to what extent hybrid events like Go Fest will still play a role in the future. Among other things, Sterenka said:

"As soon as it's safe for us to do so again, we want to get back to those extreme premium in-person live events. But we think players will always want the global version as well. So what you'll probably see in the future is even more of a hybrid than in the past. [...] In the long run, we want to get back to what made these events special in the first place. [...] We're looking at what's the right balance between these in-person events in a big park and the global experience where everyone can participate.

"

According to Sterenka, however, the coming months will not only bring more GO festivals and Safari Zones, but also new features that will initially be available as part of test phases for individual regions. The option to improve Pokéstops should be available worldwide as soon as possible - but there is no release date yet. The developers also pointed out that Pokémon GO is far from "feature complete" - so fans can still look forward to new features, whatever they may be.

Nevertheless, even if Sterenka and Marz could not or were not allowed to talk about many details, they announced that they want to document the further development of Pokémon GO as a roadmap via the developer diary. So fans should keep their eyes open for new info on the official blog.
